How Long Do Commercial Vehicle Wraps Last?

Durability is one of the most common questions fleet operators ask before investing in vehicle wraps. The short answer: a professionally installed vehicle wrap using premium materials lasts 5 to 7 years in typical commercial use. But several factors affect that lifespan, and understanding them helps you get the most out of your investment.

Factors That Affect Wrap Lifespan

Material Quality

This is the single biggest factor. Premium vinyl from 3M, Avery Dennison, or similar manufacturers is rated for 5 to 7 years of outdoor use. Economy vinyl from lesser-known brands may only last 2 to 3 years before fading, cracking, or lifting. At Choice Graphics, we only use premium commercial-grade vinyl because the labour cost is the same regardless of material, and cheap vinyl that fails early is more expensive in the long run.

Lamination

Printed wraps (as opposed to solid-colour vinyl) must be overlaminated to protect the printed graphics from UV damage and abrasion. Quality laminate adds years to the wrap's life and maintains colour vibrancy. Our fleet wraps always include UV-protective laminate.

Installation Quality

A properly installed wrap with sealed edges, correctly heated curves, and clean underlying surfaces will last significantly longer than a rushed or poorly done job. Lifting edges and bubbles are signs of substandard installation and will lead to premature failure.

Climate and Sun Exposure

Alberta's climate presents challenges for vehicle wraps: intense summer UV, extreme cold, road salt, and gravel. Despite this, wraps perform well here because they are designed for outdoor use. Vehicles that are garaged or parked indoors when not in use will see longer wrap life.

Maintenance

Regular washing extends wrap life by removing road salt, grime, and contaminants that can degrade the vinyl over time. Hand washing or touchless automatic washes are recommended. Avoid brush-style car washes, which can scratch the surface and lift edges.

Signs Your Wrap Needs Replacement

  • Fading: Colours losing vibrancy, especially on south-facing panels

  • Lifting edges: Vinyl pulling away from panel edges

  • Cracking or peeling: Usually indicates age or material failure

  • Yellowing of laminate: Indicates UV degradation

When your wrap reaches the end of its life, we remove it and install a fresh one. The original paint underneath is preserved and protected.

Maximizing Your Wrap's Lifespan

  1. Wash your vehicle regularly (bi-weekly minimum for commercial vehicles)

  2. Park in shade or indoors when possible

  3. Address any lifting edges immediately (a quick heat-and-press fix prevents further damage)

  4. Avoid pressure washing at close range (keep the nozzle 12+ inches from the surface)

  5. Invest in quality materials from the start

At Choice Graphics, our fleet wraps are built to last. We use premium vinyl, protective laminate, and professional installation techniques that deliver 5 to 7 years of reliable performance. Request a quote for your fleet.
